Where an MX record sends mail

MX tells incoming mail which server to use. The website address and the mail address are separate.

When you buy business mail and DNS is here, MX is written to mail.yourdomain. If mail lives elsewhere, set MX to the value that company gives you. An A record is not an MX record.

  1. Read the server name on the mail card.
  2. In the DNS tool, choose MX as the type.
  3. Set the value to mail.yourdomain. Do not delete the root A record.
