How to choose a domain name for a small business

10/11/2026

A domain is the address a customer repeats. It appears on a card, in a biography, and on an invoice. A pleasant word is not enough. The person who hears it once has to type it correctly.

Keep one spelling

Two words written together are usually enough. A hyphen, a number, or a hard abbreviation loses a customer every time someone has to guess. Say the name aloud. If the other person can write it after one hearing, it is a candidate.

If the brand is taken, pick an honest neighbour. Adding a digit to another firm's registered name leaves you in their shadow. The customer cannot tell which site is the real one.

Pick the ending for the work

.com is still the ending people recognise. .net, .org and .online are also easy to remember. A cheap new ending does not make the address look serious. Read the renewal price before you pay. A low first year can hide an expensive second year.

Think about mail at the same time

The first job after the name is an address such as info@ or hello@. A quote sent from a free personal mailbox looks weaker than the same words from the firm's own address. See domains.
